Bollywood New Fashion trends by Manish Malhotra: 1 Fashion became fit: From Sonam Kapoor’s clothes in I Hate Luv Storys to Kareena Kapoor’s cargos in Golmaal 3, body-conscious clothing that showed off a toned frame became popular. 2 Metallic colours: Aishwarya Rai’s look in Robot was inspired by the Autumn/Winter collection at Versace. Everything there was metallic and those colours were replicated in her wardrobe designed for the film. The look caught on.
Volume took over: The Kalidar (traditional garment that is voluminous towards the hemline) took over.
Back to basics: Monochromatic looks became big this year. Stylists finally bid goodbye to the typical style of combining too many colours and stuck to sporting a single shade.
Return of the back: The back became the focus of most garments. Indian women might not be too comfortable showing off cleavage or their legs, but the back can be sensuous without being too risque.
The cowl salwar: Kareena Kapoor’s look in Jab We Met became really popular and saw girls on the street teaming the salwar with T-shirts.
The bag story: The sling bag was done to death this year, but it was truly the year of over-sized bags.
Natural returns: The out-of-bed look with loose ponytails or messy waves caught on.
Faux antique jewellery: The chunky pieces were seen everywhere.
Socialite look: The socialite style of combining western dresses with blow-dried hair and Indian earrings should come to an end with this decade. It’s time to move on.
